Psychological Assessments

At Benoni Therapy & Assessment Centre, our professional team can offer the following psychoeducational assessments:

Cognitive/Intellectual Assessments (IQ Assessments)

Very often educators and other professionals will refer a child for a cognitive or intellectual assessment (also known as an IQ assessment). Possible reasons a child may be referred for this kind of assessment include academic difficulties in the classroom, attention and concentration problems, behavioural difficulties etc. The cognitive assessment is performed on a person in order to determine that person’s relative strengths and areas of development in terms of their intellectual functioning. Areas assessed in this kind of test include attention and concentration, social reasoning, perceptual-motor functioning, memory, etc. From the results, different recommendations are made in order to guide the parent and the various treatment professionals in how to move forward. Some examples of possible recommendations could include a referral to a doctor for medication, a referral to a different school, and a referral for play therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy.

Emotional Assessments

Emotional assessments are conducted using tests which tap into a person’s unconscious and conscious mental states. In an emotional assessment, the psychologist will be looking at the person’s personal experience of themselves and important others in their environment, specific anxieties or concerns, difficulties with adjustment, evidence of trauma etc. An emotional assessment is very often conducted with an IQ assessment in order to rule out any cognitive or intellectual disabilities that could be impacting on the particular behavioural difficulties or emotional problems.

Career Assessments

These kinds of assessments are useful in assisting teenagers and adults in making more informed decisions when it comes to choosing a career, or pursuing a specific field of study. They will often include an IQ assessment, an emotional assessment, as well as a personality and interest assessment. When these results are combined, they allow the psychologist to provide practical and concrete recommendations in terms of the careers or fields of interest that would best suit the person’s unique characteristics.
